Rating: - Simple Spider-Man story for your superhero
A very simple book to explain Spider-Man's origin. The book introduces the basic concepts (the death of Uncle Ben is handled indirectly). The story ends with a clear message that everyone shoul do their best to help others.
I have a four-year old and a five-year old who love superheroes. There aren't many comic books they can read and enjoy that are age appropriate. I don't let them watch the Spider-Man and other superhero movies because they are rated PG or PG-13.
These books provide a good outlet for their imagination and are mixed into our regular rotation of bedtime books (Dr. Suess, Berenstain Bears, Where the Wild Things Are).
Here are two other paperback children books from DK Readers that I recommend for Spider-Man fans:
Spider-Man's Worst Enemies
The Story of Spider-Man (Level 4: Proficient Readers)
Rating: - Inappropriate illustrations
I found the illustrations in the book appalling. Page 5 shows Aunt May with an expression like the wicked witch, while Peter is pointing with a questioning expression to some unidentifiable food on the table. This is not the Aunt May I remember in any Spiderman story.
I had to tear out page 26 which portrays Mary Jane in an outfit like a streetwalker. Although Mary Jane made some poor choices, I disagree that she needs to be dressed so poorly in a book for Level 1 readers.
I did not like this book at all and do not recommend it to anyone who is purchasing it for young readers. Perhaps it should be listed for ADULT level one readers.
Rating: - Pretty good
A good little intro to Spidey for kids. The one flaw is it sort of explains Spiderman like he really exists.
