What I've always liked about Spiderman, and why he's been my favourite US comic superhero since the 60's were because of the problems he had.
Disrespected at School by his peers for seemingly being a nerd, and having loads of problems even as his alter ego Spiderman, like when taking pictures of his enemies and trying to sell them to J Jonah Jameson and usually being ripped off in the process.
Very little went right for Peter Parker in these early stories.
On one page he would be fighting a Super villain and on the next page he'd be worrying about, Aunt May's health.
Those contrasts fascinated me as a child, and even now come to think of it.

While Superman was just too unbelievable for me, and Batman (Even though I liked the Character)was a millionaire who didn't need to worry about the financial aspects of everyday life,
in poor Peter Parker's life these things were all consuming.
This comic book creation is the zenith of all comic book creations.
The artwork is not as dynamic as it would be in later years but is charming nevertheless.
I remember showing my son some of the stories when he was about 8, and him saying
"I wish a radioactive spider would bite me".
Godbless,read and enjoy.
You won't be disappointed.

These is the first Spider-man stories ever written, these stories are what made Spider-man the success it is today. Stan Lee, comic creator legend (created X-men, Daredevil, Hulk, and much more)writes some of best Spider-man stories ever, creating a character that we can all relate to in one way or another. Although the comics this book collects were written in the 60's I think they are still just as great today, as they were then.
The origin of the Amazing Spider-man, when Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider, his whole life changes. He also realizes that with great power, comes great responsability. This is the story of bookworm Peter Parker, changing into Spider-man. These stories also include our hero's first encounters with classic villians like Vulture, Doc Oc, the Lizard, Electro, and Green Goblin. Other characters are equally important, driving the story that is almost like a soap opera, these characters include, Aunt May, Uncle Ben, Liz, Betty Brant, Jonah Jameson, and Flash Thomopson. This book really does show us Stan Lee's true genious.
The art by Steve Ditkco shouldn't be left out either, although the pictures are black and white, the art was done very well. We can also see the classic Spider-man look, which is basically the same as his look today.
Although Marvel Masterworks: Amazing Spider-man includes the same stories with color, it's much more expensive, and doesn't have as much issues as Essential does. This is a great collection of classic comics that will be great no matter when. If you're a Spider-man fan, this is a must-have, it's also very affordable, a cheap price for many pages of good entertainment.

Wow, talk about a trip down memory lane! Although I enjoyed revisiting the adventures of the world's most human superhero, the experience would have been much improved if the book had been printed in full color and on decent paper. Of course, then it probably would cost twice as much. Personally, I still would have bought it, because not only would reading it have been much more enjoyable, the collector value would have been much higher.
Three stars for resorting to cheap newsprint style paper and low-grade inks.

What can I say? More spidey than you can shake a stick at for peanuts. If you ever wished you had the patience to cut out and neatly collect all the Sunday paper comics in a nice neat scrap book then this is the book for you. I'm planning on buying the lot and thoroughly enjoying my strolls down memory lane.
